Old & In the Way: Live at the Boarding House

Here they are at last - the complete Boardinghouse shows by Garcia, Grisman and friends. The 1975 album "Old & In the Way" was a smashing success, and more or less responsible for a renewed interest in bluegrass. It was released on CD in 1986 and followed up ten years later by two more CDs, "That High Lonesome Sound", and "Breakdown". The three CDs together contain all the songs presented at the two concerts with a few repeats; 43 cuts in all.

This new 4 CD set finally presents the two shows exactly as they were recorded. Inevitably, we get a few more alternative versions of songs, bringing the tally up to 55 cuts. If you already own the three previous releases you might as well stick to them, but otherwise this set is a bargain!

The playing is inspired - the real scoop was to get veteran fiddler Vassar Clements on board, but David Grisman, Peter Rowan and John Kahn also do a great job with Rowan taking most of the lead vocals. And, as you might recall, bluegrass and the banjo were Jerry Garcia's first musical obsessions. The tracks mix traditional bluegrass and folk standards with originals mainly by Clements, Rowan and Grisman, as well as cover tunes from various sources, Jagger/Richards' "Wild Horses", to name just one.
