For those of you that haven't heard the Merle Saunders and Jerry Garcia releases on Fantasy Records (Live at the Keystone Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Encores and Fire Up), they represent one of Jerry's most vibrant endeavors outside of the Grateful Dead. Fantasy has now released Well-Matched: The Best of Merl Saunders & Jerry Garcia, a selection of tracks from those releases as well as a previously unissued treatment of "I Second That Emotion".
As Grateful Dead authority Blair Jackson points out in his booklet notes, Saunders helped Garcia expand his harmonic knowledge and even showed him some Art Tatum runs. "He taught me music," Garcia said of his friend. Well-Matched finds the two musicians and an all-star supporting cast exploring a wide range of material, from rock and reggae to blues, R&B, and jazz.
