Grateful
Dead: S.N.A.C.K. Benefit concert, Kezar Stadium, San Francisco (3/23/75)
When
it was reported that San Francisco s school board lacked the money to
continue funding extra-curricular activities, Bill Graham swiftly organized
the SNACK (Students Need Athletics, Culture & Kicks) Benefit, which took
place in the citys vast Kezar Stadium on 23 March 1975. The remarkable
bill featured Santana, the Doobie Brothers,Grateful Dead, Jefferson Starship,
Joan Baez, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and others.
The Dead
were supposedly on hiatus at the time, but promoter Bill Graham persuaded
them to appear, together with guests Merl Saunders and Ned Lagin. Including
material from the work-in-progress Blues For Allah, as well as a superb
rendition of Johnny B. Goode, their rapturously received set, broadcast
on K101-FM, is presented in full here, together with background notes
and images.
