"We left with our minds sufficiently blown and still peaking..." We're headed back to that peak with the newly returned tapes from Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, Binghamton, 11/6/77. The Grateful Dead's last touring show of 1977 finds them going for broke, taking chances on fan favorites like "Jack Straw," "Friend Of The Devil," and "The Music Never Stopped," carving out righteous grooves on a one-of-kind "Scarlet>Fire" and a tremendous "Truckin'."
And,
speaking of that:
-Truckin' is where the dam bursts. The sting of Jerry's wrathful licks
is first felt at the end of the first chorus. From then on he unleashes
a torrent of blistering guitar attacks played way up on the neck at high
volume. His assault reaches its acme after the last chorus as he climbs
the ladder of the song's opening riff on the sturdy shoulders of Phil's
bass playing. When that jam is brought down again, he steps up for some
showboating the likes of which we've rarely heard from him before or since.
The Dead, for this song at least, is clearly Garcia's backing band, setting
up rhythmically each opening for Garcia's almost metal'ish lines. Wow!
